Looking for some fun spring activities to take full advantage of this beautiful season? Well I’ve made a list for you!
Guys I am so excited. You have no idea. Now that spring is finally arriving I am just so happy! Spring has always been my favourite season, although I like the weather of summer better. It’s amazing–spring is a time of new starts and flowers and baby animals. It’s just the happiest time of the year!
Now, to all you Americans who are going to inevitably start saying things like “But it’s been spring for a month already!” No, it hasn’t. I’m from Ottawa, Canada. We still had snow last week. So for me, spring is just starting now.
I don’t want to let this spring go to waste, though, so I’ve compiled a list of spring activities to do with my husband or on my own that will help me really appreciate the small beauties that this season brings. I hope you enjoy them!
One of my favourite parts of this season is that little green buds start poking up everywhere. I love walking to school and seeing a crocus where only last week there was just a tiny little green speck peeking up from under the dried winter debris. Go explore your neighbourhood looking for flowers and appreciate their beauty when you find them. It’s the little things.
Go for walks
Even if you’re not looking for anything in particular, the weather is so nice you’ve just got to get outdoors! Lacking some motivation? Pop outside for a 20 minute stroll. Breathe in that lovely spring air and I’ll guarantee you you’ll be able to get that next little bit of work done!
Clean your house
You might not think this counts as fun, but I’ve always enjoyed spring cleaning. There’s something so lovely about just freshening up your home. Winter leaves so much greyness and gloom, so I love to get a broom or duster and chase all signs of winter away. Throw open those windows and enjoy your clean home!
Switch out your closet
Put those winter boots and that parka away! All you need now is jeans and a light sweater. It’s so magical.
Watch some frogs
I love animals, which is one of the reasons I love spring so much. Ottawa is filled with green space and rivers and canals, and I love to go and just watch the frogs and tadpoles whenever I can find them! Walk around your area and try to find a little marshy area to watch some frogs all wake up after their hibernation all winter.
Feed some ducks
Ducks are just the best. I love to save up the heels of the bread for a few weeks and then go down to the pond and feed the ducks and their little ducklings. It’s so much fun, and almost acts like a time machine since feeding ducks is a classic childhood past-time.
Be active outside
You’ve been cooped up in a gym all winter, so now you can finally go and workout outside! Find out if your area has any good running trails or adult jungle gyms (where I used to live had one for working out purposes!) and go crazy! Be creative, and look places you normally wouldn’t to find fun ways to work out while enjoying the fresh spring air.
Go to a playground
It can be so fun to just play baseball in the park or swing on a swings set after being inside for so long. Grab some friends and just go have some fun at a playground or a park like you did when you were kids!
Have a picnic
I love picnics. When it gets a bit warmer, take your lunch and a blanket and go to some green space by yourself or with some friends and have yourself a picnic!
Plant some flowers
Tulips, daffodils, whatever suits your tastes! Even having a small flower garden on a balcony apartment can liven up the place so much. This year I’m planting a pot of flowers in our backyard and I am very excited.
Start a vegetable garden
This is the perfect time to start that vegetable or herb garden you’ve always wanted! May is generally the ideal time to start planting, so don’t wait too long, get started now! That way all summer you’ll have delicious food that you grew yourself. It’s very therapeutic to garden and you also get a reward out of it. Win-win situation, in my books!
Start working on a project
I don’t know why, but I always feel very motivated and creative around spring time. Do you knit? Start up that project you’ve been putting off! I’m quilting Connor and myself a spring-time blanket (I know, I’m so cool I can’t even handle it) and I want to have it completely finished by June when we officially move into our new place. Find something fun to do or something you’ve always wanted to try and try it! Spring is the time for new things!
Read in a park
I’m all for getting active in the outdoors, but this is also a great opportunity to just sit and enjoy the nice weather with a good book. There’s something very calming about being all bundled up in a blanket sitting beneathe a tree with a book. Do you have a summer reading list? Why not start it now!
Depending on where you live, and what you consider spring to be, berries are starting to ripen soon! I generally go berry picking in the first few weeks of June, and it is always a great time. Pick a bunch and it’s very cheap and you can freeze the extras for later!
Sit and revel in the fact that school is going to be over in only two weeks’ time.
This is by far the best part about spring. Spring is the start of many new things, yes, but it’s also the end of school! Don’t let yourself get so busy that you don’t take time to celebrate the fact that you survived the semester. Take a day or two and celebrate your success!
