The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 5: Roommate Edition

7 Aug
This is the last day of the first week of the Freshman’s Guide to College, and today we’re talking about how to be a great roommate!

Going to school is so exciting, and getting to have roommates or housemates is honestly one of the best parts. I definitely love living with my husband, but I also loved (and miss a little) living with the girls at the condo I was at for my first two years in school.

Whether you’re going into residence in the new school year and will have a roommate you’ve never met before or going to be renting a house with a bunch of friends, there are some things you can do to make sure that it is as smooth as a transition as possible.

So, through my experiences with myself and my amazing housemates, I’ve compiled some easy steps to becoming the roommate ever.

Enjoy. [Read more…]

The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 4: Making Friends

6 Aug

It’s Day 4 of the Freshman’s Guide to College! I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at back to school shopping, how to chose your courses and some tips and tricks for saving money when buying textbooks! Today, though, I want to change focus a little bit and make it more social. Today we’re talking making friends in college!

Making friends in college can be tough.

When you’re a kid, it’s easy. You just go over and ask “Do you want to play?” and then BAM! New best friend. In high school, everyone knows everyone, and you spend all day with the same people every day. In college, though, everything changes. You’re in classes with hundreds of people at once, in a new city, and it sometimes seems that you don’t  have common ground with any of them.

Here’s some hope, though: I made friends. And I was a homeschooled, opinionated, nerdy, over-achieving, younger-than-everyone-else kid. My first day of school, my hair was big and frizzy, I couldn’t get my contacts in so I had my giant glasses on, and I spilled coffee on my shirt only 15 minutes into my first class. And you know what? I made some of my best friends on that day!

So although it may be intimidating, making friends is very possible. Of course, there are some things that make it easier, and some things that are definite no-nos.  [Read more…]

The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 3: Saving Money on Textbooks

5 Aug
We’re 3 days in to the Freshman’s Guide to College and today we’re talking about buying textbooks!

Buying textbooks is the bane of the college student’s budget. It’s crazy that a book that you’re only going to use for 3 months and then never open again costs over $130.00! When you calculate how much the books for 5 courses all cost, including lab kits and workbooks, you can easily be looking at $600 a semester.

That being said, you know how much I spent on buying textbooks this entire year? A whopping $175. And I sold two of my books back for $60 each, so I am sitting at a $55 all year on textbooks. [Read more…]

The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 2: Choosing your Courses

4 Aug
It’s Day 2 of The Freshman’s Guide to College and today we’re talking about choosing your college courses!

Yesterday we talked about how to make sure you’re not spending unnecessary money on supplies you’ll never use. Back to school shopping is a ton of fun, but courses are a whole other story. Choosing your course load can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never had to do this before! What’s better? Having one or two courses every day, or two insane days but a 4-day weekend? How do you know which professors will make your life a living hell, and which will light a fire in your heart?

It can seem overwhelming, but I’m hoping that with these tips I make it a little less scary for you!

3 Aug

Welcome to the Freshman’s Guide to College series! This is the first part of the ten-part series I’m doing as college is starting up again!
