25 Things to Do Before Finishing College

30 Sep
I’ve loved the college experience over the last three years. But this is my last year.

It really hit me this last week especially, as September is coming to a close and I have no idea where it went. Fourth year has been my favourite year so far, but it definitely hasn’t been easy.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my future recently (like every senior ever) and how much of a gift the college experience is. I don’t have a 9-5 job (even though I study for about 60 hours a week), so I have a lot of flexibility. I don’t have kids to take care of, and I have a whole world of academic opportunity open to me.

After I had been thinking about all of this, I found a list I had written in my first month of school here in Ottawa–my college bucket list. It was so interesting reading through it and figuring out which I have and haven’t done as of now, and I thought it was actually quite a good list!  [Read more…]

The Professional Collegiate: Classroom Etiquette

28 Sep
Is it just me, or is classroom etiquette pretty much non-existent most of the time?

To try and amend that, today on The Professional Collegiate we’re talking about how to be polite and always act with class and professionalism in class. This might be a strange thing to talk about, but I really think that it’s necessary, and it’s always nice to know the dos and don’ts for any situation. I’m so bad at picking up on the social niceties in a given situation–truth be told, usually I rely on my Nana to tell me what the unspoken rules are, and I just follow her lead (she is the epitome of class).  [Read more…]

The Professional Collegiate: The Dos and Don’ts of Talking to Professors

21 Sep
Today on The Professional Collegiate we’re talking about how to talk to your professor!

Talking to professors is a quintessential part of student life, and if you don’t talk to your professors, you should really start. Being able to have a real discussion with your prof is essential for so many reasons, the most important ones being (in my opinion):

  1. You don’t waste time struggling with material you don’t understand because you can just shoot them a question
  2. It’s a great networking opportunity for meeting professionals in your field
  3. You get extra information about the expectations for the course that isn’t in the syllabus
  4. It’s great practice for talking to people in any form of authority over you later in life
  5. You feel more confident in your school environment

That being said, talking to your professor can be scary!  [Read more…]

How I Organize my Agenda

18 Sep
I have to admit: I’m a little obsessed with making sure I organize my agenda

But hey, what college student isn’t? Your planner is your #1 tool to help you get organized in college! There are tons of due dates and club meetings and conferences and it’s almost impossible to keep it all straight without a master planner.

However, just owning a planner is not enough to get organized! I learned this one the hard way–I had a planner in my first year of school that was an utterly chaotic mess, and it didn’t help organize my life at all but made me more confused! Luckily, last year I really ironed out my planner strategy and I think I’ve got it pretty much down at this point.

I’m well into my senior year, so it’s going to be more important than ever to make sure that I organize my school and personal life so that I make sure I get everything done. [Read more…]

How I Take Notes in Class

16 Sep

Taking notes was one of the most daunting things for me going into college.

I was homeschooled all throughout my schooling, apart from kindergarten (if that even counts), which means I had never had to take notes in my life before. I always just got to study at my own pace–I had never experienced a classroom setting before. I didn’t know how to take notes about things the teacher was saying, and I had no idea what I should be writing and what I shouldn’t! I was completely freaked out and thought I’d miss everything.

Turns out it’s really not all that hard once you get the hang of it, and I was perfectly fine after about 2 weeks. That being said, I know that there definitely are things to do to enhance your note-taking skills, and to help you take the most efficient but complete class notes possible.  [Read more…]
