The Professional Collegiate: Why I Don’t Wear Sweats

14 Sep
I’m sorry, but I will never understand why college students seem to never even try and dress for success.

I was in class the other day and looked around at my classmates. I’m in my final year, which means that most of us will need letters of reference from our professors about our professionalism, academic abilities, and suitability for graduate school. But when I looked around, I noticed that about 50% of the students were wearing sweat pants in class.

So I decided that I wanted to start an on-going series on this blog called “The Professional Collegiate,” since I really think that professionalism is something that we are missing as students more often than not. It’s something that I learned last year, and definitely didn’t take seriously my first year in college.

The truth is, though, with it being so hard to find a job right out of college, we collegiates need to do all that we can to start off our work life on the right foot!  [Read more…]

DIY College Survival Kit

9 Sep

One of the things that I learned living off campus was how annoying it is to forget things.

It’s always the little things, too, like kleenex, or a highlighter, or headphones. But it just makes your day a little more difficult, and when you’re on a budget it’s not fun to have to shell out even just $5 if you’ve got the exact same thing at home.

That’s why last year I decided to make myself some college survival kits of all of the things I most commonly forgot!

I love these for two reasons: first, it takes away the chance that I’ll be silly and forget something if I’m in a rush (which is a very likely probability); and second, it makes my purse so much more organized! I am very picky about what goes into my bag, and these make it so much easier to find everything since it’s all contained in a pretty little pouch.

I made one for my purse, one for my book bag, and one for my backpack so that I’d always have one on me no matter which bag I chose that day! These are quick, easy, and such a huge help when you’re rushing out the door! So here’s what I put in mine, and some guidelines to help you make one yourself!

13 College Care Package Item Ideas

4 Sep
I always have the hardest time thinking of great care package ideas for family and friends.

I’m not a gift person at all, so whenever I want to send a nice one to someone I’m always at a loss! This year, though, I decided I want to send a few to some friends that I have who go to school in different cities, so I decided to compile a list of some items that I would enjoy to receive so that I had a reference point to go back to later when I’m once again staring at a blank box trying desperately to come up with care package ideas!

Care packages are such a great way to let that person know that you’re thinking about them. Whether you’re sending it to a friend who went to a college in a different state than you did, or to your older sister who’s moved off to a big city for a new job, it’s always a wonderful way to let them know that you love them and miss them, as well as bringing a bit of happiness into their day!  [Read more…]

7 Questions to Ask Yourself BEFORE Picking a Major

2 Sep
Picking a major is a really hard decision. And there aren’t any fool-proof ways to do it, either.

The majority of students change their major at least once, and I completely understand why! You are a totally different person when you first step onto that university campus than when you graduate four years later. That being said, I do think that most people who change majors do so not because they have necessarily changed fundamentally as a person but because they chose a major without asking themselves some important questions to make sure it was the right choice first.

I know that everyone is starting school already, but the reason I’m writing this now is that I know that many of you guys will start questioning whether or not you chose the right major in about two months. So, to save you that trouble and stress right before your first exam season, I compiled a list of questions that I asked myself to help me choose my own major and that I think will help you make sure that you are picking a major that is complimentary to who you are as a person and what you want your life to look like 20 years from now!  [Read more…]

Syllabus week is one of my favourite weeks of the entire school year.

And no, not just because there aren’t any papers due yet. I love that I get a whole week to just get to know your classmates, skim over the material for the year, and talk to professors while still in a relaxed setting (more like the calm before the storm).

From my experience, starting off your year at college on the right foot is the best way to guarantee academic success. There are 5 things that I do every semester that really help me get organized and prepare myself for a great semester, and I thought that today I’d share them with you!  [Read more…]
