How the Church Can Help With Mental Health

28 Jan

Despite awareness campaigns in almost every area of our lives, mental illness still tends to be a rather taboo topic in the church.

I’m not quite sure why this is, to be honest. It’s not like Christians don’t suffer from mental illness (look at ANY of the prophets. You think they weren’t depressed?) But somehow I think that a lot of Christians have this unconscious belief that if you’re a good enough Christian you’ll never suffer from mental illness.

I think that’s ridiculous. We don’t say “if you’re a good enough Christian you’ll never get sick,” even though many places in the Bible say that God will heal us. So why are we so terrified to acknowledge that we, as Christians can suffer from mental illness?  [Read more…]

The Time I was Disappointed by Puppy Therapy.

23 Jan

One of my resolutions this year was to take better care of my mental health. And spend more time with puppies.

So when I heard that my school was offering free pet therapy services, I melted a little.

I am a major dog enthusiast. My father is allergic to dogs, though, and I’ve always resented that a little bit, even though it’s not at all his fault. It’s like resenting the ground for being underfoot. It really doesn’t have any say in the matter. Nonetheless, I do admit to holding a tiny grudge against his allergies for the entirety of my childhood because it meant that I didn’t get to have a fuzzy little puppy to hug and play fetch with growing up. Instead, I got a gecko.

Now, when I say I am a dog enthusiast, I don’t want you to start thinking that I actually know anything about dogs. I just really like watching videos of them try to jump over things or attack their own reflection on youtube. Also, my limited range of knowledge is even further limited to only a few species; namely, corgis and dachshunds.  [Read more…]

Handling Anxiety in College

21 Jan

Sometimes I feel like college stress just sucks the life out of me.

Honestly, I think it’s worse to suffer from anxiety in college than in almost any other life stage. If you experience work-related anxiety, at least you’re away from work at night. When you experience school-related anxiety it follows you everywhere. You can’t sleep, eat, or take a five minute break without being reminded of 76 things you should be doing and that someone else is probably doing. Someone who will take your place in that grad program you’re trying for.  [Read more…]

9 Active Date Night Ideas

5 Jan
Do you ever just run out of good date night ideas?

Something Connor and I have only done a handful of times in our entire relationship is a typical dinner date. Seriously. The traditional “dinner-date” date nights we’ve had are our first date, my birthday/celebrating our engagement, a celebration of finishing exams, and two other random occasions. Since I can cook relatively well, we don’t really like the idea of spending a ton of money to go out and eat unless we have a good reason.

Besides the price, I just don’t find dinner dates very much fun. You just sit there, and it’s great to get to know someone, but when you know them well enough to be married, I don’t see the point in sitting around making small talk anymore. I find that sitting and talking together over a meal is completely different than true communication. [Read more…]

5 Ways to Fight Off Sickness During Exams!

30 Nov

Exams are coming up, so of course all of us are trying to figure out how to not get sick for exams for once.

Isn’t being sick the worst? I’ve been living on my own for almost 3 years now, and I really do love it.

But whenever I get sick I just want to curl up and have my mommy brush my hair and sing me soft kitty. Yep, even as a married woman. I just want my husband to rub my feet and my mom to sing me Soft Kitty. I’m pathetic when I’m sick. [Read more…]
