7 Things to Know BEFORE Starting Your First “Real” Job

29 Nov

Are you ready to start a career?

Sure, you have a degree, you have some basic work experience, but do you know how to set yourself up for success from the get-go?

I am SO excited to have Patty Moore on the blog today because, frankly, I have no idea what it’s like to work in the corporate world! I graduated university and started working online from home in a family business–so I know a lot about entrepreneurial work, but not a ton about jobs with benefits!

Patty’s got some great stuff for us today, and I hope this helps you start your first “real” job off right!

Here’s Patty!

When it comes down to starting your first ‘real’ job, there are a lot of things that no one really ever takes the time to tell you.

Jump starting your career after graduation is really fun and exciting, but it can also be somewhat overwhelming if you don’t really know the ins and outs of the working world. Side jobs during high school or college pale in comparison to your first actual job in the field that you worked so hard to get into while working on furthering your education.

With that in mind, there are seven things that I wish I knew before I started my first real job in the working world. Let’s take a closer look at these things, so that you may be able to start out on the right foot with the right knowledge.

1. Salary Negotiation is Key

The salary negotiation process with a potential employer can make a break a person’s career. While it may not seem like much, the difference of $5,000 in starting salary can make a huge difference over the lifetime of a career. While negotiations with salary are very important, and you don’t want to sell yourself short, negotiating benefits and other incentives with the employer is just as important. Brush up on those negotiation skills!

2. Ask about Student Loans Repayment Benefits

Speaking of benefits, student loan repayment benefits are offered by many employers and in increasing number. Sometimes, companies may not be up front with you about these benefits and their availability. Always ask a potential employer if they offer any sort of student loan repayment options for you to consider. If they do, definitely take advantage of it so that you can get those student loans paid off sooner. Many companies offer matching contributions, so every payment you make gets doubled.

3. The Importance of Flexibility and Adaptability

When you take that first step into the working world, it is really important to be flexible and adaptable in many situations. Flexibility is a strong point because the work force is always changing and growing, and you have to really be able to keep up and adapt to these changes if you want to be successful. The more flexible you are, the more valuable you may be to a company. On the flipside, the more flexible you are, the least likely you are to be sidelined by getting laid off by your company!

4. Networking Can Take You Further

While you may have a great skill set for a particular job opportunity, you may not always be recognized for just your skill sets. Networking can take things a step further for you. Consider making genuine connections with people that you come across in your personal and business life. The bigger your network, the more opportunities you may find. Your networking relationships will not just be one sided either, you may prove to be beneficial to someone else within your network.

5. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

I made the mistake of comparing myself to just about everyone that I was envious of in my workplace. This is wrong on so many levels because it really just makes you feel inferior, and that isn’t the right mindset for the workplace where teamwork is needed. There is nothing wrong with admiring a characteristic that someone possesses, but to compare yourself to them is only doing you an injustice. Open yourself up to your potential for greatness without comparing yourself to everyone else’s highlight reel!

6. Utilizing Retirement Benefits is a Must

Touching again briefly on benefits, taking advantage of retirement benefits offered by your employer is always a great idea. They may have options available such as 401K and other retirement plans. Whether you choose a traditional retirement savings account like the 401k or opt for something a bit more profitable and risky, make sure that you contribute regularly. Find out if your employer offers matching contributions. Just like the student loan repayment benefits, you can double the pace if a company offers this!

7. Bonus Tip for Student Debtors– Student Loan Consolidation and Refinancing Options

Another important factor you should consider after graduation is student loan consolidation and refinancing options that may be available to you. Federal consolidation loans are made available for debtors that wish to combine their loans, making it easier to cover their monthly payments. Private student loan refinancing is another potential option to consider; it offers the same baseline benefits of a federal loan and something else entirely. If done right, you can lower the interest rate on your loans, but you must be creditworthy in the eyes of the lender. Needless to say, if you can drop your interest rate, then you stand to save money!

Graduated with student loans? Here are some ways to get out of debt sooner!

Gratitude Challenge | I was grateful every hour for a day, and this is what happened

2 Aug

Are you a grateful person?

I mean, if you were to think of how you feel on a daily basis, would “grateful” be one of the words that came to mind?

I’m a grumbler. I can notice something bad in almost anything, and I’m the kind of person who will mull over everything that could have been better, or how it went wrong, or what those people should have done instead.

Yup. Not all that grateful.

So I thought this was the perfect video which which to introduce you all to a new chapter of my life.

I’ve been having a hard time figuring out what to write about since I’m not in university anymore. I know a lot of people keep being college bloggers when they’re out of college, but I want my blog to be personal–it was fun when I was going through it, too, but I don’t want to feel distant from you guys. I want you to feel involved in my life, and for us to be able to have shared experiences. I’ll still be posting some college stuff in the next few months since I know so many of you are in school, but a lot will be guest posts or else posts that are just stuffed to the brim with stuff I wish I had known.

Since finding things to write about without any real “mission statement” for my blog has been so difficult, it’s slipped through the cracks with everything else I’m doing. Mainly, I’m preparing for my book launch (which is starting in just a few weeks!) and creating an e-course with my sister, which is going to be awesome. (We’re making a course for moms and their preteen/teen daughters to work through to give the sex talk in an empowering, non-scary way while still sticking by Christian principles and not shying away from the tough topics.)

But over the summer, I’ve been missing this.

I’ve been missing working for myself. I’ve been missing working on a project that brings me life and joy because it’s truly what I want to do. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving both of the jobs I’m doing right now–but they definitely feel like work right now! Making a course and launching a book are hard, people, and doing them at the same time doesn’t make them any easier!

So I’ve decided to jump into it again, and here’s how it’s going to work.

Every week, I’m issuing a challenge to myself. And I’m making YouTube videos about it, posting what I’ve learned and tips about that particular thing here on the blog, and giving behind-the-scenes footage to newsletter subscribers.

You have no idea how excited for this I am. I’ve been looking forward to being able to do this since May, and my first video came out today!

Let me know any other challenges you want to see me do. This coming week I’m eating vegan food ONLY for a 5-day stint, and I’m already realizing how hard that is going to be (I’m on day 2).

I’m looking forward to actually getting to show you my life. I’ve been feeling very disconnected from you all recently, and I think this is a positive step! Plus, I’m just seriously enjoying myself. :)

Let me know what you think!

I’m Terrible With Gifts | Minted Haul

9 Apr

I am one of the worst gift-givers on the face of the planet.

So now that all my friends are graduating, it’s actually quite a source of stress for me. It’s pathetically hilarious how annoyed I get by gift-shopping, my sister can attest.

I just sit there and make sarcastic comments and then take 45 minutes to just end up buying that scarf that I saw five minutes after walking into the store.

I just don’t have “the gift” when it comes to buying gifts.

See, I like practical gifts. I like things that say, “Here, I want to make your life more beautiful, and easier at the same time.”

That’s something I really like about Minted’s graduation gifts. They’re really good at making gifts that you can actually use, and gifts that really bring life to a room without just adding to the clutter.  [Read more…]

5 Graduation Gift Ideas Guaranteed to Make Her Smile!

3 Apr

Looking for graduation gift ideas?

Graduation season is upon us! And both my husband and I are graduating this year!

(OK, so technically I graudated in October last year, but my convocation is in June, and Connor won’t be done for a few months because he has 3 more courses to take, but we will both be finished our school this year. Phew. That was long-winded.)

It’s dawning on me what a huge deal graduation is. Whether you’re graduating from your undergrad, your college program, or a master’s, this is a huge feat!

You went into school unqualified for the majority of the jobs on the market. You went into school a child–you graduate an adult.  [Read more…]

Do Christians Know How To Have Fun? St Patrick’s Day Musings

20 Mar

Can Christians have fun? Do we know how to?

So this weekend was St. Patrick’s day, a day meant to celebrate the amazing life of the missionary St. Patrick who helped to revitalize Christianity during a time of great darkness. He’s definitely a man worth celebrating.

But I noticed this weekend that the only people truly celebrating were the non-Christians. And they were celebrating by clubbing and drinking and with quite a bit of weed (hey, it’s green!).

Christians, on the other hand, may have posted something nice to Facebook or worn a green top or something, but other than that it was just the normal drudgery. [Read more…]
