Easy Ways to Boost your Resume | The Professional Collegiate

8 Feb

Have you ever gone somewhere to apply for a job, met another applicant with a really great resume and immediately felt  defeated?

I have, that’s for sure. A resume can be so intimidating–it’s a 2-3 page document that a potential employer uses to decide whether or not the company will give you an interview–that’s a big deal for such a small thing!

It can be hard, too, when you feel like you don’t really have a great resume. This is a problem that I know a lot of my friends have faced as they’ve entered the business world after graduating from the academic one. And hey, graduating and finding a job is scary enough as it is–so I thought I’d give you a few pointers on how to build yourself a great resume while in college so you don’t have to worry later!  [Read more…]

9 Quick Ways to Look Put Together | The Professional Collegiate

5 Oct
I have so many friends in school who always look put together and I was so in awe of them for the longest time.

You know, the girls with the perfect makeup, perfect skin, the long, sleek hair that just falls perfectly over their shoulders, and who are always wearing super cute clothes, even if they’re just at school. I just never can measure up. I’m always doing so many things at once that I forget something, whether it’s my hair, or to put my contacts in, or to iron that shirt I wanted to wear.

Please tell me some of you can relate.

Over the last year or so, however, as I’ve strived to become more professional at school and pretty much everywhere, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks to fake it even if I didn’t spend a ton of time getting ready in the morning. Sometimes it’s great, and I have enough time to get all dolled up, but sometimes life happens and I’m up late getting a paper done, or I sleep through my alarm. So, for those times, here are 9 QUICK ways that I always use to still look put together, even if I don’t feel it at the time!  [Read more…]

The Professional Collegiate: Classroom Etiquette

28 Sep
Is it just me, or is classroom etiquette pretty much non-existent most of the time?

To try and amend that, today on The Professional Collegiate we’re talking about how to be polite and always act with class and professionalism in class. This might be a strange thing to talk about, but I really think that it’s necessary, and it’s always nice to know the dos and don’ts for any situation. I’m so bad at picking up on the social niceties in a given situation–truth be told, usually I rely on my Nana to tell me what the unspoken rules are, and I just follow her lead (she is the epitome of class).  [Read more…]

The Professional Collegiate: The Dos and Don’ts of Talking to Professors

21 Sep
Today on The Professional Collegiate we’re talking about how to talk to your professor!

Talking to professors is a quintessential part of student life, and if you don’t talk to your professors, you should really start. Being able to have a real discussion with your prof is essential for so many reasons, the most important ones being (in my opinion):

  1. You don’t waste time struggling with material you don’t understand because you can just shoot them a question
  2. It’s a great networking opportunity for meeting professionals in your field
  3. You get extra information about the expectations for the course that isn’t in the syllabus
  4. It’s great practice for talking to people in any form of authority over you later in life
  5. You feel more confident in your school environment

That being said, talking to your professor can be scary!  [Read more…]

The Professional Collegiate: Why I Don’t Wear Sweats

14 Sep
I’m sorry, but I will never understand why college students seem to never even try and dress for success.

I was in class the other day and looked around at my classmates. I’m in my final year, which means that most of us will need letters of reference from our professors about our professionalism, academic abilities, and suitability for graduate school. But when I looked around, I noticed that about 50% of the students were wearing sweat pants in class.

So I decided that I wanted to start an on-going series on this blog called “The Professional Collegiate,” since I really think that professionalism is something that we are missing as students more often than not. It’s something that I learned last year, and definitely didn’t take seriously my first year in college.

The truth is, though, with it being so hard to find a job right out of college, we collegiates need to do all that we can to start off our work life on the right foot!  [Read more…]
