7 Questions Every Psych Major Is Tired of Hearing

12 Feb

Choosing to become a psych major is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I mean, apart from marrying my husband or deciding at the age of 13 to finally engage in normal personal hygiene routines. (It was time.) But in any case, I love being a psych major.

In what other major do you get to talk about what makes people do the things they do for hours on end and not be seen as some sort of strange freak? There’s no more “Honey, talking about people’s early childhood experienced with their parents isn’t acceptable conversation at the dinner table.” No, these people get me.

That being said, there are quite a few people who just don’t. And I find that whenever I say I’m a psych major, I inevitably get asked the same questions that always betray the fact that the asker doesn’t actually know much about psychology. [Read more…]

How to Master Secondary Readings–Without Spending Hours Reading Them!

10 Feb

Have you ever found yourself completely overwhelmed by how many secondary readings you have to get through on top of your textbooks and notes and lecture slides?

Secondary readings are the bane of the busy college student’s existence. You don’t need to know them as much as you do your textbook, but is it worth hours and hours in the library?

Today I got my mom to help out with this question, since she knows her stuff when it comes to secondary readings. She’s got an undergrad degree, two masters’ degrees in public admin and sociology, and spent two years in grad school as a TA for first, second, and third year courses. She knows her stuff. So sit back, relax, and let her tell you all the great tips she’s told me!

Easy Ways to Boost your Resume | The Professional Collegiate

8 Feb

Have you ever gone somewhere to apply for a job, met another applicant with a really great resume and immediately felt  defeated?

I have, that’s for sure. A resume can be so intimidating–it’s a 2-3 page document that a potential employer uses to decide whether or not the company will give you an interview–that’s a big deal for such a small thing!

It can be hard, too, when you feel like you don’t really have a great resume. This is a problem that I know a lot of my friends have faced as they’ve entered the business world after graduating from the academic one. And hey, graduating and finding a job is scary enough as it is–so I thought I’d give you a few pointers on how to build yourself a great resume while in college so you don’t have to worry later!  [Read more…]

7 Tips to Conquer Group Projects

3 Feb

Alternative title: how to survive group projects without killing anyone.

Group projects are the bane of my existence as a college student (especially as an ENTJ college student). Let’s be real: they’re inefficient, infuriating, and generally just assigned by the prof because he/she doesn’t want to mark all that many papers. Which is understandable, to be honest.

One of the things I find most frustrating about group projects is that often your grade suffers by working with other people. What I find really ironic, however, is that often everyone’s grade suffers, because most of the time the issues have to do with organization, rather than actual ability.

Of course, sometimes it’s just an issue of you getting a slacker on your team. But not always.  [Read more…]

How to Write a Research Paper: A Complete Guide

25 Jan

If you’re in college, odds are you’re going to face the dreaded 20-page research paper sometime in your academic career.

These things used to freak me out so much that I think I spent more time crying about the paper than actually sitting down and writing it (yup, those are healthy coping skills for you). After doing a few, though, I quickly realized—Hey! these aren’t actually scary at all!

A lot of college comes down to knowing how to do things rather than knowing about what you’re doing, which is why you can get a 90 on a paper you didn’t really understand but had a solid rubric, but a 72 on a paper that you could talk about for days but wasn’t sure what the prof wanted.
