The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 10: Staying in Touch with Family & Friends

14 Aug
Today is the last instalment of The Freshman’s Guide to College, and we’re finishing by talking about how to maintain relationships with family and friends after you move away.

Everything we’ve talked about so far has been strictly about your new life at college, but what about the people we leave behind? It’s equally just as important to stay in contact with your family as it is to make new friends. Your family is always going to be there for you, and if we’re honest, unless you end up working in the same place as your college friends they’re probably not.

Friends are important, too! Your friends from high school know a part of you that your college friends will never truly understand. Your experiences in high school and the world you grew up in has become a part of your past, but those friends understand that part of your life like no one else will can.

The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 5: Roommate Edition

7 Aug
This is the last day of the first week of the Freshman’s Guide to College, and today we’re talking about how to be a great roommate!

Going to school is so exciting, and getting to have roommates or housemates is honestly one of the best parts. I definitely love living with my husband, but I also loved (and miss a little) living with the girls at the condo I was at for my first two years in school.

Whether you’re going into residence in the new school year and will have a roommate you’ve never met before or going to be renting a house with a bunch of friends, there are some things you can do to make sure that it is as smooth as a transition as possible.

So, through my experiences with myself and my amazing housemates, I’ve compiled some easy steps to becoming the roommate ever.

Enjoy. [Read more…]

The Freshman’s Guide to College Day 4: Making Friends

6 Aug

It’s Day 4 of the Freshman’s Guide to College! I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at back to school shopping, how to chose your courses and some tips and tricks for saving money when buying textbooks! Today, though, I want to change focus a little bit and make it more social. Today we’re talking making friends in college!

Making friends in college can be tough.

When you’re a kid, it’s easy. You just go over and ask “Do you want to play?” and then BAM! New best friend. In high school, everyone knows everyone, and you spend all day with the same people every day. In college, though, everything changes. You’re in classes with hundreds of people at once, in a new city, and it sometimes seems that you don’t  have common ground with any of them.

Here’s some hope, though: I made friends. And I was a homeschooled, opinionated, nerdy, over-achieving, younger-than-everyone-else kid. My first day of school, my hair was big and frizzy, I couldn’t get my contacts in so I had my giant glasses on, and I spilled coffee on my shirt only 15 minutes into my first class. And you know what? I made some of my best friends on that day!

So although it may be intimidating, making friends is very possible. Of course, there are some things that make it easier, and some things that are definite no-nos.  [Read more…]

9 Things That Went Perfectly Wrong at My Wedding

29 Jul

As I’m sure all of you know, on July 18th I went from being Rebecca Gregoire to Rebecca Lindenbach. It was the most amazing day of my life, even though wedding planning was less than fun for me. I am so in love with my husband, and the day was everything I could have possibly dreamed of.

There were so many things that went perfectly at my wedding. I made the jewelry and they all looked amazing on the girls, I got to get so much precious time with Connor’s family, who all live in BC, which is a plane ride away for us, and my bridesmaids and I got to spend so much time just goofing off together.

However, the stuff that went well really isn’t all that interesting to hear about, and being a bride I was so worried that things would go wrong. [Read more…]

18 Things I Wish I Knew When I was 18

27 Jul

My baby sister just turned 18! It’s insane thinking that she’s an adult now, considering 18 means she’s an adult now, and I don’t really like that she’s going to be able to do adult things now. It’s just strange.

It got me thinking back to when I first turned 18. Eighteen was a big year for me–it was the year that I moved out for school, got my first full-time job, figured out what I want to do with the rest of my life, and met my now-husband, Connor. But 18 wasn’t all good for me–some parts were really hard, actually. I had my heart broken. I started struggling with anxiety. I was extremely lonely when I first moved out.

I did pretty well that year but there are definitely some things that I wish I had known ahead of time. So, Katie, this one’s for you: here are 18 things I wish I knew when I was your age–moving out, just turned an adult, and kind of scared with all the change. [Read more…]
