5 Ways to End a Friendship Without Making Matters Worse

7 Oct

Wondering how to end a friendship? You’re not alone.

We’re all about thriving in life here on Life as a Dare, and that includes in our friendships. But not all friendships are thriving. Sometimes, though, even when we know a friendship is bad for us, it’s really hard to let a friendship fade.

But I think it’s very important to be able to let go. Here’s the thing: we’re living in a very connected age. Everyone’s on multiple social media sites, we’ve all got cell phones with us 24/7, and it’s just a cultural norm to be keeping tabs on what everyone we’ve ever met is up to these days. There’s no escaping people anymore!

When our parents were kids, if you moved to a different city for college, you just kind of accepted that your friendship was going to fade. All you had to keep in touch was phone calls with obscene long-distance charges and snail mail. Which wasn’t even called snail mail back then–it was just mail.

But now, there’s no natural end point for any relationship. You’ve always got facebook, skype, or texting to keep in touch. So where we used to be able to just naturally accept when a friendship was coming to a close, now there’s pressure to put a lot of time and energy into keeping up with people that was never there before.

There are a lot of really good reasons to let a friendship end. I actually did a video on it this week, where I talked about when you should end a friendship: [Read more…]

How to Be More Creative in Your Everyday Life

6 Oct

When you’re in your early twenties it can be really hard to figure out how to be more creative on a regular basis.

It’s easy to get swept away into watching Netflix for hours, or going to work and coming home without ever really exercising your creative spirit.

But here on Life as a Dare we’re all about taking life to the next level–it’s not enough to just sit back and let life just zoom on by. And taking time to be creative is such an important part of that! There’s something about being creative that helps center you like nothing else can.

So today I am so excited to let Elizabeth from Incidents of a Literary Nature chat with us about how to be creative as a daily part of our lives!

Love these points! Here’s Elizabeth:

7 Things I Wish I Knew in Junior Year

4 Oct

Junior year is pretty crazy, not gonna lie.

My third year of college was both fantastic and horrible. The great parts were that I was engaged to be married, I was writing a book proposal for my first actual full-size real-life adult book, and I loved my courses. The bad parts were that I started to get really stressed. Like really really stressed.

I’ve written about my struggles with anxiety before, and this is the year that it all really started. Looking back now, I recognize that there were a lot of things that I was worrying so much about that were completely unnecessary. And, to be honest, it’s sort of sad to see how much emotional energy I wasted over that year.

So in this instalment of the “What I Wish I Knew: College Edition” unofficial series, I wanted to help those of you in junior year who may be struggling the same way I was. I hope this helps! [Read more…]

7 Reasons You Should Take More Risks

27 Sep

Have you ever wanted to do something exciting, but were too scared about taking risks to actually do it?

This year is a really exciting year for me. I’ll be finished my undergrad in about two or three weeks, and I’m just working this year. But the exciting part is that I’m working completely online. I’m a virtual assistant for my mom, actually, and I’ll be working 20 hours a week on this blog.

So although it’s all very invigorating, a lot of this year is going to involve taking risks to help this business grow. I could be working a full-time job in an office here in Ottawa, but I’m choosing to do this instead.

And although I couldn’t be happier with the decisions, it’s all kind of scary to have uncertainty about where I’ll be in two or three years.
